North Carolina: The Biltmore

Last Saturday I arrived safely in North Carolina after 13 hours in the car with my kitty. The drive went fine (my car didn't act strange at all, although I was a bit nervous about the insane hills in NC, my car is just not use to any kind of incline) The cat behaved herself for the most part except for a brief period of crazy meowing before lunch and a spell of panting after lunch, where I thought she might die of heat exhaustion at any moment. Other than that the trip was fine, a bit boring, especially Florida and South Carolina, and I was more than thrilled when I finally arrived at Aunt Margaret's and Uncle Mike's, although they weren't even home! But that was fine, we went out to eat at a cute local place and I had a fabulous burger to end my day.
On Sunday we went to church and out to eat with Missy and Josh in downtown Asheville, which was cool, they warned me we would see some crazy people with odd colored hair, but I didn't see anything too weird this time. In the afternoon Uncle Mike and Aunt Margaret took me to the Biltmore, which I wanted to visit last time I was in Asheville for Missy and Josh's wedding, so i was very excited. It was just as huge and glamorous as I had imagined, with a bowling alley and an indoor swimming pool in the basement (and this place was built in 1898!) I learned some things about the house that i didn't know like, George Vanderbilt built the house when he was still a bachelor, and he only lived in it for 19 years before he died! Which seems a shame for spending all that money on such a huge home. I guess the story goes that George visited Asheville and said that he wanted to own all the land he could see from a certain spot in the mountains, and being the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, that wasn't really a problem. Of course you can't take pictures inside the house so here are some pictures of the facade and the grounds.
